πŸ“˜ Buyer's Guide

Single-Mode vs Multimode Fibre

Multimode fibre (OM3, OM4) is common inside a building: between telecom rooms, inside server rooms and for shorter backbone runs. Optics are cheaper, and 10-gigabit runs reach roughly 300 m on OM3 and 400 m on OM4.

Single-mode fibre (OS2) goes much further, from hundreds of metres to many kilometres, and has the most room for future speeds. It is our default for building-to-building links, large campuses, carrier hand-offs and any backbone you want to last for decades.

In many projects we install both: single-mode for the long backbone and multimode inside the data room. We also pull spare strands, because labour is the expensive part and extra strands cost very little.

Where fibre makes sense

Any run over 100 m, any link between buildings, high-rise risers, areas with heavy electrical noise like manufacturing floors, and uplinks between switches that need 10, 25 or 100 gigabit.

What you get at closeout

A labelled enclosure at each end, a strand map, OTDR traces and loss results for every strand, and as-built drawings that show where the cable runs. Your next contractor will thank you.

❓ Common Questions

Fibre Optic Installation FAQ

Straight answers for property managers, general contractors and business owners.

Do you do fibre splicing?

Yes. We fusion splice pigtails, repair damaged fibre and terminate into rack-mount enclosures.

Should I use single-mode or multimode fibre?

Single-mode (OS2) for long runs, building-to-building links and long-term backbones. Multimode (OM3/OM4) for shorter runs inside a building or data room. Many projects use both.

Do you OTDR test fibre?

Yes. Every strand gets OTDR and insertion-loss testing, and you receive the results with your as-built documentation.

Can you run fibre between two buildings?

Yes. We install underground and aerial fibre links with outdoor-rated or armoured cable between buildings on the same site.
